Okay I've decided on a topic that has been on my mind lately.

Being practical.

What's being practical actually? Tit for tat? Being calculative? Or in a nutshell, protecting your own interest?

I agree it's important to take care of oneself but in certain situations, being practical may bring more harm than good. To protect one's interest, it may be at the sacrifice of others.

Or selfishness, it may seem.

Once, I asked a friend of mine for help.

No, he said. You didn't help me.

I recalled several instances in which I did but he rebutted, saying he had helped me in return for those times.
So if I needed any help from him, I have to help him back.

It seems fair but to certain degree, selfishness still lingers in that idea. No doubt it was being practical and to protect his own self- interest but to a certain extent, it sounded pretty selfish.

We should always help without expecting any return. Afterall, what matter most is the happiness you gave them and the joy it brings you. Being practical may seem to be the best solution at first but in the long-run, it may bring more harm than good.

That I'm not saying that being practical is completely wrong but use it wisely- it may be at the expense of others.

To bring back the topic to the conversation I had with a certain friend, it was indeed a practical idea to suggest benefits for his help. However, it may not had occurred to him that it had already benefitted him by helping others, to see them happy and perhaps, they will intitiate an offer to help you before you asked them!

"To give and not expect return, that is what lies at the heart of love." -
Oscar Wilde.

With that, I end this lengthy post. =D
